Merodach-Baladan

Merodach-Baladan
(reigned ca. 721-710 b.c.)
A Babylonian nobleman who became king of Babylonia but was unable to hold onto his throne in the face of Assyrian aggressions. Although Merodach-Baladan (or Marduk-apal-iddina) was the name assigned to him in the Hebrew Old Testament rather than his actual Babylonian name, the biblical version stuck and is the one used most often today. Shortly after Merodach-Baladan became king of Babylonia, Assyria's King Sargon II attacked and forced him to flee to Elam. Seven years later, with the aid of the Elamites, Merodach-Baladan made a comeback and once more sat on the Babylonian throne. But then Sargon's son and successor, Sennacherib, drove Merodach-Baladan away again. The deposed ruler, whom the Assyrians labeled a "terrorist" in their annals, soon launched a rebellion in hopes of regaining power; he was unsuccessful, and not long afterward he died in exile. The biblical book of Isaiah (39.1-4) tells how Merodach-Baladan tried to get Hezekiah, king of the Hebrew kingdom of Judah, to help him fight the Assyrians, which turned out to be another failed effort. Despite his bad image in Assyrian writings, the Babylonians remembered Merodach-Baladan as a good ruler who bravely tried to defend his country against outside aggression.
